UK CENTRE FOR CARNIVAL ARTS
LUTON

PROJECT COST: £7.5 million
COMPLETED: March 2009
PROJECT ARCHITECT: Ash Sakula Architects

...the UK’s first dedicated space for carnival arts

Project summary

The Carnival Arts Centre in Luton is a new home for the development and promotion of carnival arts and artists, showcasing all aspects of carnival arts and housing an archive of artefacts and costumes. It is unique in that it provides a dedicated arts centre to promote and serve the interests of carnival arts and carnival communities both nationally and internationally.

As well as providing a large space and technical facilities for the communities of Luton to prepare their costumes and floats for their own Carnival, this major new cultural resource will attract thousands of people each year including Carnival artists, schools, course attendees, conference visitors, creative industry start ups, archive users, the local community and a wealth of outreach activity.

Charcoalblue has provided theatrical planning and technical design for the space, including innovative technical solutions for the Mas Camp area which allow the space to be used both for the assembly of carnival floats and for performances.
